بند امير

Band-e Amir dam is located 35 km north-east of Shiraz on Kor river, the river that has always played an important role in the history of Iranian hydraulic engineering. The early history of this dam is probably 2500 years old. Some 1000 years ago Amir Azadoddowle-e Deylami rehabilitated the dam and from that time it was called Band-e Amir which means Amir Dam. The dam was originally constructed with the purpose of irrigating the large fertile plains of Marvdasht and Korbal and using water power to rotate the turbines of more than 30 units of water mills. The bridge which is constructed on its crest, connects the two river banks. The dam and the bridge on it are made of of stonework with saroodj mortar (Iranian cement). Band-e Amir dam is 103 m in length and 9 m height above the river bed.

The base width is 20 m and the crest width is 7.5 m. The bridge consists of 13 arches. The overall height including the bridge is 13.5 m.

This multipurpose structure is still in service owing to its excellent planning and design, except that since 1960 the water-mills were left idle and now they are all ruined. The Gowshir canal on the right bank of the reservoir behind the dam was probably constructed to divert the river during the canstruction period and certainely intended to maintain a constant height of water level.

At the times of flood although water is discharged mainly by the dam crest, Gowshir canal serves as a spillway. Since the downstream slope of the dam is made of coarse limestone, part of the energy of water is dissipated as the water is flowing over it.

The dam has a stilling basin at the toe a few meters below the water surface to dissipate the rest of energy of flood.
